Problem
How do I create client accounts using WebHost Manager?

Solution

Creating Your Hosting Packages

Before you can create any client hosting accounts, you must create one or more hosting packages. A package is a collection of features that you will give to a client account or a group of client accounts. To get started, click "Add Packages" under "Packages" in the left frame of this window. Now you have to fill in the blanks:

Package Name - Normally something like "Basic" or "Advanced" or "Silver" or "Gold." It can be whatever you like.

Quota - This is the maximum disk space this account can use. All usage is metered for the account and counts toward this total: Web files, mailboxes, databases, and log files. Since your clients don't have full control over log files and mailboxes, you shouldn't cut this too close. Anything below 20 MB is probably not a good idea.

Also, note that we allow overselling, so while your total usage might be limited to say, 500 MB, you can allocate as much as you want to your various accounts. That is, the sum of the disk quotas for all your accounts may exceed 500 MB. But the sum of the disk space in use must stay below 500 MB.

Shell Access - Please uncheck this for now and only give shell access to trusted clients who really need it.

Max FTP Accounts - This is the number of addon FTP accounts the site will have. An addon FTP account is a directory with an associated username/password that a certain user can access via FTP for upload/download.

Max Email Accounts - This is the number of e-mail mailboxes the account can create. These store incoming e-mail. Your client can also create an unlimited number of e-mail forwarders which just send incoming e-mail to another address (either an address at the client's domain or an external address at hotmail, yahoo, aol, or wherever).

Max Email Lists - This should be a small number. It is the number of mailing lists the user can create. These are discussion-style lists where every e-mail sent to the list is broadcast to everyone subscribed to the list. Keep the number of lists small because mailing lists are very resource-intensive if a lot of members subscribe.

Max SQL Databases - Number of databases this account can create.

Max Sub Domains - Number of subdomains the account can add, e.g. sales.domain.com, support.domain.com, etc.

Max Parked Domains - cPanel allows parked domains where you place a second domain on top of the main one for an account. For Web access, either domain works the same. For e-mail, each domain can have its own mailboxes and forwarders.

Max Addon Domains - This should normally be 0. An addon domain is a domain name parked on a subdomain of another account. This allows your customer to host multiple domains, each with their own separate Web site and e-mail, under a single account. There are some limitations and it can be a bit confusing to use, so I don't recommend you do this unless you really want to offer this as a feature to your clients. It is normally best to create a separate account for each new domain however.

IP - Leave it unchecked.

CGI Access - Should normally be checked.

Frontpage Extensions - Normally this would be unchecked, but if you want FrontPage on all your domains for this package, you can check it.

Bandwidth Limit - The maximum bandwidth this account can use per month. If it exceeds the limit you set, the account will be automatically suspended. Keep in mind that we allow overselling of bandwidth, just as with disk space.

Cpanel Theme - x, x2, and bluelagoon allow access to all features and are best. "x" is a good default. "x2" has a larger header which just takes up space. The "bluelagoon" theme is also nice in that it subdivides the screen with headings that make it easier to find the items you need in Control Panel.

Feature List - Leave this at "default" for now.

Now click "Create" to create the package. You can create any additional packages you want as well by clicking "Add Package" again and filling in the blanks for the next package.

Creating a Client Account

To create a client account you now need to click "Create a New Account" under "Account Functions" in the left frame of this window.

The main steps you should take now are:
  1. Type the domain name, username, and password for this account.
  2. Enter the Contact Email for this account at the bottom (this receives server notifications such as "low on disk space" and it can be your e-mail address instead of your client's if appropriate).
  3. Choose a package from the Package dropdown near the bottom of your screen. This will pre-fill all other fields.
Now you can override any fields as necessary, and then click "Create."
